Without having a crystal ball — and recognizing the pace of change — one of the most significant factors I anticipate in my company over the next 15 years will be the continued evolution of knowledge surrounding sustainability and the circular economy. I expect that awareness and understanding of these concepts will continue to grow, with both residential and industrial consumers becoming more informed and engaged in recycling and sustainable practices. As education and awareness expand, we expect to see increased interaction, behavioral changes and participation in sustainability efforts, driving further innovation and progress in our industry.

The key driver of this shift will be education. Businesses and organizations that already recognize the value and long-term impact of circularity will continue to lead the charge. However, we will likely see a slower rate of adoption among individuals and entities that do not yet prioritize sustainability at the same level. Bridging this gap through education and accessibility will be crucial to ensuring widespread adoption of circular economic principles, as well as helping people see the direct impact of recycling in their day-to-day lives.

Another critical development in the next 15 years will be global advancements in circularity, particularly in supply chain dynamics beyond the United States and other developed nations. As industries worldwide adopt more sustainable practices, it is my hope that the United States remains at the forefront, aligning with global standards and progress. The integration of circularity into global supply chains will not only impact our industry but will also redefine how businesses approach resource management, waste reduction and long-term sustainability.

Ultimately, I believe that, as education deepens and sustainability becomes a fundamental expectation rather than an option, we will see a transformative shift in how businesses and individuals engage with recycling and environmental responsibility. The challenge lies in ensuring that this momentum is sustained, and that the United States keeps pace with global advancements in circularity. As for myself and the team at South Post Oak Recycling Center, we are planning to continue having a greater impact on a global circular economy.
