Taking CEO succession from governance to strategy. “Most boards would agree that CEO succession is a primary responsibility of the board. However, many CEOs and board members do not make it a priority. The mindset needs to change from reactive succession thinking (engaging in emergencies with no planning) to continuous succession strategy (treating succession as a strategic initiative with integrated planning and pipeline evaluation). The board needs to advise staff to integrate leadership planning into their business strategy, identify successors for critical roles, and prioritize leadership development and retention at all levels.”
